But keep in mind these fabrics must still be treated for ultraviolet and water resistance.

A caution about “waterproof” covers. For covers to be truly 100% waterproof they would need an impermeable layer such as vinyl. While there are alternatives to vinyl, these tend to be cost prohibitive for simple patio covers. They can be had but expect to pay hundreds of dollars instead of fifty or so dollars. Also, fully waterproof covers have a hidden issue in that they are not breathable and trap moisture leading to unsightly and problematic mildew issues. Vinyl covers as noted above also tend to stiffen in the cold.

On the other hand, quality water resistant fabrics do keep most of the water out and allow the cover to breath, thus not trapping moisture. Polyurethane inner coatings are a good choice to achieve this good balance. A check with the seller or the production information should clearly outline this feature.

Size and selection in a world of non-standards

It may seem logical that patio furniture comes in a few standard sizes but the opposite is true. Furniture is sold by many retailers and online companies and they come from a vast number of different factories, the result is that there are no standard sizes. So, finding and selecting well-fitting covers can be challenging.

While major retailers might stock some covers, they usually have a small selection in limited quantities and only for a few months a year.
